Preparing Coal for Loading
 
Once the overburden is removed, graders move in to clean away clay impurities on the top of the coal seam.  Drilling equipment is also brought in to obtain coal samples.  The coal seam is then ripped – using a large tracked dozer – or blasted to make it easier to load.
