Lignite is used in a
Environmentally Responsible manner by power plants

• Lignite-fired power plants have invested over $800 million in state-of-the-art technology to keep our air clean. This investment accounts for 20 to 30 percent of the cost of a power plant.

• More than 70 percent of lignite-generated electricity is scrubbed to remove sulfur dioxide, compared to about 35 percent for states east of the Mississippi River.

• North Dakota is one of only 11 states in the nation that meets all of EPA's strict federal ambient air quality standards (Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota & Vermont). Source: EPA Green Book, January 18, 2005.
